HbA1c is also called Hemoglobin A1c. The main function of the hemoglobin protein is to transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues and then to transfer carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs. It is found in the red blood cells. It is hemoglobin that gives the blood its red color.
The HbA1c test measures the amount of sugar or glucose attached to your hemoglobin. This test is done to check if you have diabetes.
You need an HbA1c test if you're showing symptoms of diabetes. These symptoms may include
- Unexplained increase in thirst – you constantly feel like drinking water.
- You urinate quite often.
- Blurred vision.
- Fatigue without reason.
The presence of one of these symptoms doesn't always mean that you have diabetes – if you end up drinking lots of water or consuming lots of liquid then for a few hours you may experience increased urination – but if these symptoms persist you must consult a doctor and he or she may advise you to have an HbA1c test done as early as possible.
