Urine R/M stands for "Urine Routine & Microscopy". Urinalysis, which means the analysis of urine, is one of the most common methods of medical diagnosis which is used to diagnose several urinary tract related diseases, and even other diseases that can be directly or indirectly related to your urinary tract.

Your doctor recommends a Urine R/M test in case he or she suspects the following ailments or medical conditions:

  • Kidney disorder.
  • Infection in the urinary tract.
  • Metabolic disorders such as liver diseases or diabetes.

A Urine R/M test can also be conducted as a part of a routine health checkup. This test is also conducted sometimes before a planned surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's prescription to get a Urine R/M as test done?

No, you don't need a doctor's prescription to get this test, but it is better to get a doctor involved because after you have received the report, you need to show it to a doctor to make sure that everything is fine.

Is some special preparation needed before giving the urine sample?

Depending on the requirement of the test, a urine sample may be taken when you haven't urinated for a few hours, or, you have urinated recently. A midstream urine sample can also be taken in which the flow of the urine is interrupted to collect the sample. An early morning first sample is preferred. Don't eat the foods that can influence the color of the urine. Your physician can give you a list of foods to avoid for at least 24 hours before submitting your sample. Don't drink lots of water just so that you can urinate. Avoid heavy physical exercise. If the test is being suggested by your doctor, inform your doctor of all the medications or natural health products that you are taking. In all probability the lab technician will be bringing a sterilized, disposable container to collect your urine sample but even if you are procuring it yourself, make sure that it is sterilized. Even small amounts of existing bacteria can lead to inaccurate results.

Is the process of getting a Urine R/M test complicated?

Not at all. Sometimes certain conditions are needed (for example, interrupting your urine flow and then taking the sample, or taking the sample after not having urinated for a few hours, like immediately urinating after waking in the morning), but all the information will be provided to you in advance either by your doctor or our lab technician.

Is excess amount of protein in the urine always bad?

Your Urine R/M report may show an excess amount of protein. Yes, there may be problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus or diabetes but even when the sample has been collected in excessive heat or cold, or if you have a fever, or you have had a physical or emotional stress, it can increase the level of protein. Therefore, it is always better to consult a doctor after receiving the report.

Should I abstain from having sex before submitting the samples?

Yes, at least for 24 hours. After the sexual intercourse, the urine may contain sperm. They can prevent accurate microscopic assessment of your urine sample.
